Basic Grooming Needs of a Dog
1. Brushing
Brushing is the most enjoyed grooming need of the dog and also by the owner. Brushing helps the dog maintain a healthy and shiny coat. The dogs get its beauty and look only with a healthy coat. Regukar brushing prevents hair shedding, improves strong coat and helps in keeping skin alergies at bay. The frequency of the brushing depends on the length of the coat of your dog. Also, choose the right brushing tool depending on your dog’s hair length.
- Long haired dogs need regular brushing, as they have a tendancy to shed hair more often
- Medium haired Dogs do not need daily brushing but weekly brushing is sufficent for the coat to be clean.
- Short haired do not need frequent brushing. The time gap between their brushing generally goes upto one month.
2. Bathing
Unless your dog likes water, bathing your dog can be very tedious. Giving a bath is very necessary as it keeps the dog skin clean and healthy. Cleanse your dog with the ideal shampoo, which suits your dog the best. Giving bath to your dog in a regular period makes him happy and keeps him very active. Giving your dog bath once in a month is the most ideal(unless he/she is very naughty and is always shabby), as regular bathing can in a way be harmful. Constant usage of chemicals can wash away essential oils which are present on their skin. Grooming your dog after a long clean bath gives the best results.
Nail Trimming
Trimming nails of your pet can often be scary and dangerous for the owner. It is always suggested that initially in the early stages, dogs should be taken to a clinic to get the nails trimmed. Get proper training, before you attempt to trim their nails. Dogs develop an instant hatred towards nail trimming if they experience any pain. Most dogs require monthly nail trims. You can decide nail trims, depending on the rate of growth.
3. Ear Cleaning
The haven for bacteria and yeast can be your dog’s ears if not kept clean. Whenever you bathe your dog, remember to clean its ears thoroughly. This routine is sufficient for most of the dogs. Other dogs(generally with floppy ears) tend to develop chronic ear problems. These dogs need a multiple cleaning every day. Ear problems are mainly caused due to allergies. If you observe a lot of debris or foul smell in your dog’s ears, consult a vet immediately and use the prescribed medicines.

Haircuts are not a major issue for maintenance of dogs. Dogs which have a tendency to grow long hair needs a haircut for every 6-8 weeks. Dogs medium hair and short hair, don’t need a haircut. Mostly beard with small hair doesn’t require haircut all their life. Only in the summer season, when the temperature rises, it is appropriate to cut their hair.
