Breeding parrots need care and for that their owners have to informative enough to give the parrots what they need. They should be given the best care and importance. Here is a bleeding parrot guide for you.

Pre breeding care for lovebirds

Lovebirds are not sexually dimorphic. You cannot tell generally whether a lovebird is male or a female by simply looking at it. There are a few subtle differences among male and female parrots, but for every feature. The best method to determine the bird’s sex is by DNA.

There are mainly two ways to breed lovebirds- One, in large aviary groups and second, by individual pairs in distinct breeding cages. If you want to carefully control the color variations in lovebirds, you can use the latter method. Moreover, it is quite easy for you to “keep the peace” among lovebirds when they have different cages. The pairs should be removed from the flight cages during breeding time. Then, they should be kept in the smaller cages more perfect for breeding purposes.

While in the cage, the parrots should be able to ‘beat their wings’ while not hitting something each time. The pair should be able to move as they like or play for exercise. You have to give them enough room for this; otherwise, you may not probably be able to breed birds.

It is believed commonly that providing toys may distract birds from mating, but it may not be true. Birds with a wide-ranging environment are happy and therefore they are more likely to act as good parents. Lovebirds are playful creatures, who need an appropriate ‘stage’ for their tricks.

Cage Considerations and Nesting Boxes

Nest box is obviously very important and must be selected with great consideration. Large parakeet or cockatiel box or English budgie nesting boxes can be used as a nest box. English budgie nesting boxes are mostly preferred, as they are open on the side with a sliding and two-way door. They also feature a little-uplifted platform towards the entrance. There is a low area for the female parrot to nest.

The nesting box should not have ‘swollen’ sliding doors as it may become very difficult for you to inspect the eggs. Lovebirds generally make elaborate nests and you don’t mostly need them. Nevertheless, if your lovebird is a lazy nest maker, you may have to keep the wooden pieces so that eggs don’t come rolling around in the nest box.

Nutrition for breeding birds and newborns

You need to take care of the diet of the breeding couples and also cleanliness around them. They cannot be forced to live in dirty cages. Nutrition decides about the quality and health of breeding pairs and their young. They must be supplied a healthy diet with lots of variety. The fresh vegetables and grains will make your birds healthy to lay fertile eggs and nurture young babies. Diet must include mainly of fresh and whole foods. The best way to provide excellent nutrition to lovebirds is by feeding them with greens and wheatgrass.
